Wine from Agriturismo Villa Stabbia

Viticultural tradition of Tuscany is as ancient as Etruscan times. Production of white wines is interesting as well but it is usually ignored because of the huge quantity of red wines available. White grapes of Tuscany include amongst others Trebbiano, Malvasia Bianca, Malvasia di Candia, Vermentino and Ansonica grapes.

Sangiovese is the most important grape of the region, widely spread and cultivated, as well as Sangiovese grosso, Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo.

The production in the wine cellars of Villa Stabbia are no longer on the large scale - as it was 100 years ago, but those of a large farm where the owners now produce wine mainly for themselves, friends and family.

The vines at Villa Stabbia are still placed on the edge of the olive terraces, as they have been for generations.

Then it made sense to use the available land as much as possible, olive trees in the middle of the terrace, vines at the edge and grains or vegetables under the olive trees.

Today it requires more manual work to maintain the plants in this fashion and yields less grapes - however wild animals and birds are pleased to visit our fields.

The wines from Villa Stabbia are true estate products. The grapes used to make the wine were grown on our own fields, vinified in our cellar, and bottled on the premises.

Vino Bianco di Villa Stabbia - DOC

The grapes for this white wine are mainly Trebbiano with a small amount of Malvasia.

The production on the farm is organic, and thus the grapes are organically grown and the wine is organically made - however the wine is not certified as such, mainly due to the small quantity of white wine produced.

The wine has a fresh fruity taste with a hint of citrus.

Very nice cooled as an aperitif or with fish dishes, light pasta dishes and served cold on a hot summer day on the terrace.

Vino Rosso di Villa Stabbia -IGT

The grapes for this light red wine are almost solely Sangiovese with a tiny amount of Canailo.

As for the white-wine, all stages of the production are organic, however the wine is not certified due to the "small" quantity produced.

The wine has a fresh taste. One can taste fresh fruit that rounds off in the aftertaste. It is ready for drinking now and is ideal to serve for lunch or with pasta, as well as chicken and light meat dishes. It will also be perfect as the wine enjoyed during the summer on the terrace or brought along for the pick-nick in the countryside.

DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata)
Defines an area, usually narrower than an IGT, having more rigid production criteria if compared to the preceding level.

IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica)
Defines wide production areas, they usually comprise a whole region, and allow the production of wine with grapes admitted and recommended in the area, usually a wide possibility of choices, set less restrictions and therefore gives more freedom to producers to make his or her own decisions about production methods. This category, although represents the first real level of the quality system legally recognized, actually include a good quantity of wines having a very good quality and it is rich of nice surprises.
